Courtney reached for her phone to shut off the alarm, wondering for a brief moment why it was going off. Her heart sank as reality snuck up on her, and she remembered she was leaving for home-if that term even applied anymore. It was early, a little after five. Vanessa was planning on taking her to the airport in just under an hour, so she knew it was time to get ready to go. She lay there for a minute, comfortable on the trundle bed she had frequented so often during sleepovers when they were kids. Time is so weird, she thought, reflecting on the thirteen years they had been best friends. Their last names were close in the alphabet, so on the first day of kindergarten they had been seated next to each other. Vanessa had taken out her Lisa Frank pencil box with a sparkly pony on it, and the rest was history. Courtney had always thought Vanessa was the coolest girl she'd ever met, and she'd seriously coveted that pencil box. She's still the coolest, Courtney reminded herself as she finally sat up.

She tried to be quiet, gathering the last of her things from around the room and making sure she had her boarding pass and ID ready to go. Checking her phone one more time to see if it was necessary to wake up Vanessa yet, she saw a text from Ethan. Excitement coursed throughout her body.

E: Hey, I know you're leaving super early this morning, and we already did our goodbyes last night, but I wanted you to have some sustenance, so go check the front door when you get up. You'll always be more of a bear claw to me, but you'll find sprinkles there too :).
